Nearby mode: chat when the internet is down

After a storm, or anywhere the signal drops, Potcake can still reach the people around you. Phones with Nearby mode turned on find each other over Bluetooth and pass text messages straight across, end-to-end encrypted.

Turn it on once. In the Android app, go to Tools > Nearby mode and allow Bluetooth.
Lose the internet. Potcake starts looking for your contacts within Bluetooth range, about 10 to 30 metres.
See who's close. Friends in range show up under Nearby at the top of your chats.
Send as usual. Your message goes straight to their phone, sealed with the same encryption as always. Sending over Nearby mode is part of Potcake Plus; anyone can receive.

PrivateEach phone sends out a short code that changes every day. Only your contacts can recognise it, and only they can read your messages.

No servers, no dataNothing goes through the internet or our server. When the internet comes back, Potcake reconnects by itself.

Good to knowWorks for text messages and location pins between two people while the app is open. Both people need Nearby mode on and need to have chatted online at least once. The sender needs Potcake Plus. Not yet on Mac, Windows, Linux or iPhone.

Your account	Your Messenger name, display name, personal message and status, so friends can find and see you.
18 or older	Whether you ticked I'm 18 or older. We never ask your age or birthday. Your contacts' apps are told yes or no, so curse words are hidden in chats with anyone under 18.
How you sign in	You sign in with Google. We receive your name, email address and Google account ID from Google, and nothing else (no contacts, files or other Google data). These let you sign in and aren't shown to other people.
Your contacts	Your contact list, pending friend requests and anyone you've blocked.
Your avatar	Which Potcake Pal you picked, if you picked one. If you use a photo or a Pal, a small copy of the picture (160 by 160 pixels), shown to your contacts and to people in your groups; a Pal is kept as a picture too so friends on older versions of the app can see it. The app shrinks a photo on your computer first, which removes hidden details like where it was taken. Switch to your initials any time and the picture is deleted.
Groups	The name of each group you're in, who's in it and who made it, so messages reach the right people. Group messages are end-to-end encrypted like all messages, so we can't read them.
Your computers	The name of each computer you're signed in on (for example "Jay's MacBook") and when it was last used, so you can see them under My Computers and remove one. Each computer's sign-in is stored only in scrambled form.
Encryption keys	Each computer's *public* encryption key, so friends can encrypt messages to you. Private keys never leave your computers.
Messages waiting for you	If a friend messages you while you're offline (including voice messages), the message waits on the server, still encrypted, until you sign in, and is deleted as soon as it's delivered. Undelivered messages are deleted after 30 days, and disappearing messages after 7.
Files you send	Files go straight from your device to your friend's, end-to-end encrypted, and never reach our server. We don't store them.
Feedback	Anything you send with Send Feedback, plus the app version and type of computer, and an email address or Messenger name if you choose to leave one.
Network addresses	Used for up to an hour to stop abuse, such as someone trying to sign in over and over. Our web server's standard logs also record them, and those logs are deleted after about two weeks.
